We are a nonprofit action and advocacy alliance that creates and supports project-based sustainability solutions in Arizona through civic engagement, collaboration, and education. We empower Arizona residents to work together toward more verdant, equitable, and sustainable communities.

Position Overview:

The Arizona Sustainability Alliance (AZSA) seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Marketing and Communications Intern to help expand the organization’s reach and visibility across digital and print platforms. Interns in this role will gain hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, brand storytelling, and campaign strategy while supporting AZSA’s mission to build sustainable communities.

Working closely with the Marketing and Communications team, interns will assist in developing and implementing outreach campaigns, creating content for social media and newsletters, maintaining consistent messaging, and measuring engagement analytics. This position is ideal for students interested in sustainability, communications, or public relations who want to learn how strategic marketing drives real-world environmental impact.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Draft and schedule engaging social media posts highlighting AZSA’s programs, volunteers, and events.
  • Write and edit copy for newsletters, press releases, one-pagers, and website updates.
  • Support the planning and promotion of events, fundraisers, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Assist with audience research and analytics tracking to measure campaign performance.
  • Collaborate with the Graphic Design Intern to develop visuals for social and print media.
  • Maintain content calendars and ensure messaging aligns with AZSA’s mission and brand standards.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and weekly team meetings to support organizational communication needs.

Deliverables:

  • Contribute to at least one marketing or outreach campaign from concept through completion.
  • Produce written and visual content that can be shared across AZSA’s communication channels.
  • Support the maintenance of AZSA’s media library, photo archive, and newsletter templates.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Sustainability, or a related discipline. Recent graduates (within 1–2 years) are also welcome to apply.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube).
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and Canva or similar tools.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently while meeting deadlines.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with email-marketing platforms (Mailchimp, Constant Contact, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of SEO or website content management (Wix, WordPress).
  • Understanding of analytics tools (Meta Insights, LinkedIn Analytics, Google Analytics).
  • Creativity and curiosity for testing new communication strategies.
  • Enthusiasm for sustainability and community engagement.

Background Check:

All offers of internships at the Arizona Sustainability Alliance (AZSA) are contingent upon clear results of a background check.

Fingerprint Clearance Card:

A valid Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card through the Arizona Department of Public Safety is required. Fingerprint fees will be covered by AZSA and must be completed before the official start date.

Connection to Sustainability:

This internship directly supports sustainability through public awareness, education, and community engagement. By communicating AZSA’s programs and impact, the intern helps inspire action and support for local sustainability efforts. This experience will demonstrate how effective marketing and storytelling can advance environmental and social goals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain experience implementing real nonprofit marketing and outreach strategies.
  • Strengthen writing, editing, and content-creation skills across multiple channels.
  • Learn how to analyze communication metrics to guide decision-making.
  • Build a professional portfolio featuring sustainability-focused campaigns.

Training / Orientation:

Interns will attend an initial orientation introducing AZSA’s mission, values, and communication standards. They will receive ongoing mentorship and weekly check-ins with the Marketing and Communications team. Training will include:

  • Brand and tone guidelines
  • Social-media best practices and analytics
  • Collaborative workflow via Trello and Google Workspace

Work Environment:

All AZSA internship positions are hybrid. Most tasks can be completed remotely, with optional in-person collaboration or event support in the Phoenix area.

Weekly check-ins with supervisors will take place via Slack, Gmail, Google Meet, or Zoom. Tools include Google Drive, Trello, Canva, and social media scheduling platforms.

Interns will have opportunities to interact with other interns, staff, and community partners across AZSA programs.
