Internship Start and End Dates: Summer internship; August 2025 – December 2025; January 2026 – May 2026
Hours per week: 10-15 hours per week
Compensation: Unpaid, unless the intern secures funding from the school/college. Mileage reimbursement for qualifying travel.
Internship format: Hybrid in Phoenix, AZ (mostly remote with some in-person activities)

Arizona Sustainability Alliance is seeking a motivated intern for our Fundraising and Grants department. This individual will learn about the basics of nonprofit grant writing and research.
Activities will focus on learning best practices for grant writing and include:
- Reviewing sample grant proposals
- Grant prospect research
- Managing grants database (Monday.com) to keep track of prospects, applications, and deadlines
- Determine alignment between AZSA’s programs/mission and funder interests
- The fundamentals of grant writing and editing
- Using statistics, testimonials, multi-media collateral, and any other data that can show the need(s) in the community and tell the story of our programs
- Understanding grant requirements and timelines
- Communication and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders for grant submissions
- Developing grant budgets
- Learning common grant documents and attachments
- Understanding grant reporting requirements
- Learning the Grant Professionals Association Code of Ethics

Training / Orientation:
- Initial training orientation sessions introduce interns to the organization’s mission, values, and goals, along with guidelines and structures. This will be followed by departmental overview, technical training, project-specific training, regular check-ins, project meetings, and feedback and evaluation.
- AZSA maintains an open-door policy and will have regular weekly check-ins with direct supervisors.
- Periodic meetings to discuss the technical implementation of various projects.
Work Environment:
- All AZSA internship positions are hybrid, with occasional fieldwork and other in-person activities. Most tasks with the Fundraising & Grant Writing Internship can be completed remotely, but physical residence in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area is highly preferred, as the internship supervisor would like the intern to attend/participate in at least one in-person AZSA program or event during the term (a tree planting, Adopt A Park, Help-A-Farm, and/or education program field trip/site visit) to experience the programs being described in grants. However, applicants in other areas of Arizona can be considered.
- If Fall semester: participation in the Sustainability Celebration fundraising event. If Spring, participation in the Conservation Invasion fundraising event.
- Weekly check-ins with the supervisor. The method of communication with the supervisor will be through Slack, Gmail, Google Meets, or Zoom meetings if done virtually. Otherwise, some meetings will be held in person.
- Feedback will be received in-person or through video conferencing.
- Tools and technology utilized will be Gmail, Google Meets/Zoom, Google Drive, Canva, Trello, Slack, Google Docs/Slides, and Survey 123.
- The intern will have opportunities to interact or engage with other interns, employees, and stakeholders that AZSA partners with.
