Volunteers will be working to beautify Michael Anderson Middle School and help expand tree canopy cover. Increasing the shade canopy through tree plantings has been linked to improved mental health, reduced asthma, and cleaner air.

Typically, schools and parks within areas with lower socioeconomic status tend to have lower tree equity scores (you can find more out here (https://www.treeequityscore.org/) and less shade coverage. Ensuring equitable tree cover throughout every neighborhood and municipality will assist in mitigating the social inequities that impact marginalized communities. Beautifying this area will benefit not only the environment but also an effort to engage youth and prepare young people for adulthood and success for the future.
