Position Title: Phoenix Tree Steward Coordinator
Reports To: Programs Director-Urban Forestry Senior Manager & Tree Steward Program Manager

Role Overview and Purpose
The Arizona Sustainability Alliance (AZSA) is seeking motivated individuals to join our team as Tree Stewards. Tree Stewards play a key role in supporting AZSA’s community-based urban forestry initiatives by assisting with tree planting, monitoring, and community outreach. This position is designed for individuals passionate about sustainability, environmental justice, and community engagement. Tree Stewards will receive training in urban forestry practices and contribute to the long-term success of tree planting and maintenance efforts in Mesa neighborhoods.
Time Commitment and Schedule
- Hours: Approximately 12–17 hours per week
- Schedule: Flexible, with required availability for check-in meetings, weekend, and evening events as scheduled
- Term: Position runs November 2025 – June 2029 with potential for renewal based on funding and performance
Responsibilities
- Support AZSA staff and community partners during tree planting events, including event setup, logistics, and volunteer coordination
- Assist with digital media creation (such as Flyers, Social Media Posts, Newsletter, Press/Media Alerts, Marketing & Communication Planning etc. as needed)
- Assist with young tree monitoring and data collection using standardized tools (e.g., surveys, digital apps)
- Conduct outreach to residents regarding tree planting opportunities (includes but is not limited to tabling at community-specific events, door-to-door canvassing, etc.) and care instructions
- Provide tree care guidance and education to community members, including watering, pruning, and long-term maintenance practices
- Document work completed, including photos, site notes, and reports for program evaluation and grant compliance
- Represent AZSA positively in the community, modeling professionalism, inclusion, and environmental stewardship
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Interest in sustainability, urban forestry, or community development
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and comfortable with physical labor conditions that include but aren’t limited to digging, planting, and lifting up to 40 lbs
- Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to engage with diverse communities
- Reliable transportation to project sites throughout Phoenix
- Must live within the following boundaries of the Priority areas designated by City of Phoenix’s Office of Heat Response & Mitigation. Boundaries highlighted by red boxes & bolded street names.

Preferred Qualifications
- AZSA values serving diverse communities. Bilingual applicants (English/Spanish) are encouraged to apply to better support our outreach and engagement.
- Previous experience in community engagement, environmental programs, or volunteer coordination is a plus.
Compensation
- This is a part-time, grant-funded position
- Compensation: $23/hour
- Mileage Reimbursement (based on company policies)
- Training, uniforms, and necessary equipment will be provided
